I want to turn my TV into digital signage and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I have seen sites like :

Greenscreen
https://www.screenbox.io/

I was just wondering if I need this apps or I can do it myself with some editing software and VLC player?
Would the steps be :

  • Create the digital signage - power point slides, edited movie etc
  • Cast them to the TV
  • run the laptop and let it play.
Is there something that I am missing?

Yup, if it's just a basic 'slide deck' that doesn't require update (like news feeds) or notifications, then yeah, your solution would work. The easiest thing would be to use Google Docs (Slides) for that, and just 'cast' the content from your computer (or phone). If I'm not mistaken, if you keep the file in Drive, you wouldn't even need to keep the computer on for the Chromecast to keep the slides playing.

Yeah for now, I am going to edit some video together and have it run, but in the future I would like some content management software for dates etc, but I haven't seen any content management that didn't come with a month subscription. Any ideas?

Also, I guess I could keep edited commercials in my drive too and keep it running, yes?
