My Galaxy Nexus misbehaves

Ok, I purchased mine in December 2011. So far it has worked fairly well, but lately I have had more problems. I'm running ICS 4.0.2 (4.0.4 not available as my device is yakjuxw). It has "freeze crashed" four times, ie. I have to remove the battery first to restart the phone. This has happened only when the phone is idle, so something bad happens in the background. Today the phone lost 3G network two times, and the network came back only by restarting the phone. But on the other hand, my phone has had network problems / weak signal from time to time, from the beginning, but isn't it the reported problem with ICS 4.0.2 that should be fixed in 4.0.4? And if the Wi-Fi is on, it have blocked the 2G/3G networks many times and then calls are not possible.

I have installed 66 apps and have shot a lot of photos.

I have a couple of solutions in my mind:

1. Backup everything and start from fresh, but staying with the yakjuxw build to not break the warranty.

2. Backup everything, and start from fresh, but installing Google factory image instead.

3. Backup everything, and install some of the cool custom ROMs instead.

4. Just wait for the yakjuxw 4.0.4 (if it ever happens).

Or is there something else I could do?

1. Don't be afraid of the Google Image :) I don't think it breaks the warranty and it's updated quicker.
2. I'd probably start with uninstalling your most recent apps or most recent updated apps; if the issue just started, perhaps something is wonky in the background.
3. If all else fails, resetting the phone may be the best option. If you do this, just reinstall your apps one at a time to make note if any cause the issues to come back.

Oh, and uninstall any task killers or power managers, too.

I agree with font1975. However, I might just start with resetting the phone to factory if you're really frustrated. I'm not sure if exchanging it under warranty is an easy option for you depending on where you're locating and where you purchased the phone.

It sounds like the issues you're having have to do with the radios, so flashing a custom ROM wouldn't help. I'm not sure if flashing the Google factory image also flashes the radios.

Thanks for the replies!

Agree with font1975, I suspect that the 'freeze crashes' are caused by some app(s) that were recently updated. I actually uninstalled one, Battery Monitor Widget, but it didn't help so I reinstalled it.

Interestingly the phone hasn't crashed since yesterday. And even more interesting, one app (Streamzoo) behaved abnormally for a while but now it seems to work better.

The radio signal problems are another problem, and some of them might be caused by the networks / tele operator I'm using.

I probably wait and see if the problems keep occuring and keep an eye on the recent apps.

I had random rebooting issues and signal issues. I finally got tired of it and sent it back under waranty. Now everything works as expected. Don't wait too long before the factory waranty runs out.

Good luck!

I was in your boat with my Galaxy Nexus, I'm in Canada and I had a Bell Canada build, I forgot what it was, but something that I'm sure was/is never going to get updated. I was frustrated with the camera performance and with the crashes and radio issues as well, and I was really nervous about doing anything in terms of flashing or fiddling. finally i just bit the bullet, did a fastboot unlock, rooted and installed CWM, and flashed stock takju from google, and my mind was blown. fixed every single issue I had, and now I've gotten into modding the softkeys and even flashed a custom ROM. I highly recommend you try to fastboot unlock and flash stock 4.0.4, takju or yakju. worst thing that can happen is you flash back to yakjuxw, fastboot lock and send it in for warranty if your problems aren't solved. just my 2 cents

Both my wife and my GNexus were not stock Google yakju builds... I did a easy total flash to Google's stock image and all if fine now.

That said, you probably only want to do this on the GSM version (we were sure to skip the Verizon one). Currently on T-Mobile's contract-less prepaid $30 unlimited data (internet-only) plan... incredible hoe much money we save in total.

I'm starting to lean towards flashing stock 4.0.4 / yakju. My GN has behaved better today but the truth is that there are issues with the ICS 4.0.2. It seems to get an awful long time for Samsung to release ICS updates so it's better to move to yakju.

My GN is the GSM-version (I'm outside of the North America). I called the tele operator that sold the phone and they gave contact info for the company that does warranty services here. The problem is that I'm without the phone for over a week and I doubt if the warranty service does update ICS. Better to do it on my own.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this (sorry for hijacking the thread!) I have a lot of experience rooting/installing custom roms on phones, I did it on my captivate, and infuse, as well as my friend's phones (HTC G2, LG G2x, SGS 4g, HTC N1, and a couple others i can't remember right now). I am in korea right now on a job contract, and I purchased a Galaxy Nexus (SHW-M420S) I read in a couple forums I should beable to root it and install custom roms just like the normal GSM version (cause its penta band also). I just wanted to make sure it would work. I found the modem that is currently installed on my phone, and downloaded it just in case I needed to use that one here...If anyone could please answer my question (If i am able to treat my Gnex like the normal GSM version) I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
