Using a N1 without a phone company?

Here's a questions: Can an unlocked N1 be used as a sophisticated wifi device without paying for service through AT&T or T-Mobile? I'd like to upgrade my iPod Touch to something more useful, but have an aversion to monthly cellphone plans.

This works, but it effectively leaves you with an iPod Touch, which is what you have, so whats the point?

1. Better screen, larger and higher resolution
2. Multitasking apps
3. More memory for music and photos (and someday, apps)
4. Potential to BE a phone if I decide to go that route

C'mon, YOU couldn't think of these differences yourself?

Do yourself a favor and buy a T-mo prepaid sim then drop 5 bucks on it. Enables everything in the market and helps location services work much better. Still WiFi only, but 11 bucks for the aGPS boost is worth it.

You already HAVE the ipod for Christ sake!

  1. You won't notice the better screen unless you watch a hell of a lot of porn.
  2. How much multitasking do you need an ipod to do?
  3. More memory only matters if you are stuck on a tiny iPod AND intend to buy a huge SDcard. We are still stuck at 32gig with this phone.
  4. When you decide to go that route, buy it then.

Buying this phone, or any phone to use it as an ipod just seems silly. What you want is probably and iPad, but maybe that's too big.

Save your money, and when you actually decide to get a phone, there will be so many more choices than there are today.

It would work just fine, although really, if you don't intend on making it your phone, what is the point?

The iPod touch can do much of what the Nexus can, minus the phone capabilities. Sure, the iPod doesn't do a lot of it quite as well. But I'd say get the Nexus and use it as a phone.

Obviously you got your answer, and if you got money, then go for it. But I can't imagine spending $529 on a phone without at least getting 3G data.
