Hi

I am completely a noob when it comes to android phones and this is my first android.

I bought a google nexus one on ebay with the following text displayed on screen once battery is installed. I tried reading here and elsewhere but I got more questions. can the phone be restored or did I just buy a brick?

I don't even know where to start. Any help is really appreciated.

Look like you're in the bootloader screen. Your trackball could be stuck as the way to get into bootloader is to hold the trackball while powering on.

Did you manage to get past the boot loader and booted?

You might want to check what version of Android is running as well. If it is some custom ROM that may have unfinished edges you may not have as great an experience being new to Android.

Enjoy your N1. It's still a great phone and can be found used for dirt cheap. The only limitation to me is lack of app storage, but there are ways around that.
