Arrow Wikipedia Confusion: root vs. unlock bootloader

I am running last iteration of GB on N1. I am following the Wikipedia article "Rooting (Android OS)".
In the "Process" section it notes that there are different rooting methods. For the three Google developer phones, including N1, it describes unlocking the bootloader. It never mentions rooting. This would seem to imply that if you unlock the bootloader that you don't need to root or that that is rooting.

I have unlocked my bootloader on a Mac Snow Leopard using the command line and fastboot-mac
In bootloader mode I have a pink bar that says **UNLOCKED" and when I power on there is an unlock icon.

Now I want to flash a recovery ROM. Am I good to go or do I need to root??

    Default

You can use fastboot to flash a custom recovery than flash a rooted ROM.

    Code:
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
the name must be exactly how your recovery.img is spell
