custom rom, open source code nexus 10 question

If I use a custom Rom on my nexus 10 will I be able to download any type of software from the internet or will it still be google app specific. And Wat does open source code mean to an unlocked phone?

It means the Android source code is open to people and manufactures. You will still only be able to run Android apps (software) with a custom ROM. You might be able to emulate things but for the most part you'll be using Android programs....
