I recall this being discussed in another thread. I believe someone shared the name of an app that will allow the screen to sleep/go blank. I'm afraid I don't recall the name of the app.

Try Screen Standby. I think it requires root.
You're looking for Screen Standby, which allows for exactly the behavior you want, as well as the option to leave the capacitive layer on. The touchscreen acts as it usually does, but the screen itself is off.
