I thought the same thing with the "playground is open" line. What better way to explain changes to the Nexus program as has been rumored? Hopefully this is the case and other OEMs soon announce Nexus phones.

I have absolutely zero to base this on, but I really get the feeling it's more than just a phone. Maybe a phone and a tablet. Maybe several phones. But not just a phone event.

That would be a fail unless they announced multiple Nexus phones and the next tablet. A whole package. Maybe, just maybe, they will announce that they are releasing an Android powered car

I agree. "Playground is open" was their line for Nexus 7.... curious, indeed. But back in earlier 2012, we heard 5 Nexus devices. Well, Nexus 7, Nexus Q, and Nexus 4 are 3 different devices from different manufacturers. WHAT IS NEXT? Hopefully, more phones

Some interesting (or reaching) ideas are being thrown around on the Verge forums in regard to the actual image Google adhered to the invitation.
Google event Oct. 29 in NYC-google-playground.png

*4 Blue Icons (buildings) = 4 New Phones
*2 Red Icons (bridge) = 2 New Tablets
*4 Blue, 2 Red = New 4.2 Update (that one makes sense).

Regardless, I'm elated Google is holding their own event instead of announcing the next advancement in Android briefly at AllThingsD.

Google is doing a lot of small things lately. But all these small tweaks and updates are really amounting to some big changes over the past couple months, all for the better.

Google is on a roll and I can't wait to see what's in store Oct 29th

Here is what I decipher from the picture if at all Google hints about nexus devices:
1st red from the right = Nexus S, about to fall off (2 year Google support) and red because its not a current year model
2nd red from the right = Galaxy Nexus, still has one year to go to fall off and red because last year model
3rd blue from the right = Nexus 7, broad structure shows that its a tablet, its in green field - shows its released out in the market and blue because its a current year model (2012-13)
4th and 5th from right = Yet to be launched Nexus phones, in yellow field because its not yet released (under testing) and blue because these will be released this year (2012-13)
6th from the right = Another Nexus phone in yellow field but still not on the Google search bar which may imply that hardware is not yet decided and so Google hasn't started testing yet

This is just my thoughts, may be its just a picture but one thing that strikes me is that, the search bar is not in the middle of the picture which makes me think there should be a reason for it.

First thing i noticed was the included voice search icon. A little obvious, but superfluous, too.
