Nexus 4 & Straight Talk Questions

Glad you figured it out and as a helpful tip to others regarding activating the sim. Just call. Straighttalk suprisingly enough has pretty decent customer service, you might be on hold 5 minutes tops and they can have you activated and minutes added in about another 5 minutes. Saves time and searching the site trying to figure out how to do what.

I have to agree on the customer service. I had to call them a few times when I (apparently) gave incorrect information to port my number to them. They were helpful and got everything squared away. They also helped when I had issues adding a prepaid refill card to the account. No bad experiences so far.

I know this has already been settled for OP but I thought people like to know that you can also get the SIM card from Straight Talk for FREE if you purchase the bundle with the first month and the SIM and then use the coupon code "SIMSAVE"...this is not an affiliate post, this is just a code I found on Google...tested it and it does work.

very sweet piece of kit!, now to sort through the carrier options...

t-mobile pre-paid (non-st) in Denver, seems to bounce btwn H and 3G / speedtest.net has shown between 5 and 18 mbps down (and 1'ish up) over the last 2 days

before i added the extra 2gb high speed data, it was pulling 125k ish (painful, but better than getting overage charges from the other carriers)

I'm thinking about getting both versions of straight talk sims to do a real world test (unless someone has already figured this out, and would like to help :P )

//thank you google!//

I have both versions of the sim (AT&T and Tmobile) results will very depending on where you live for sure, so doubtful my results will help you but. For me, since I'm in a Tmobile HSPA+42 market data speeds were better and more consistent with the Tmobile sim from straight talk.

If they only offer standard sim card for T-Mobile, cutting it down is not that difficult. Lots of templates available with a Google search. You can order a sim card cutter if you're nervous, but if you have a sharp pair of scissors and/or a knife, you can easily cut a card down without one if you are careful and take your time.

There's an option to use Data Roaming in the setup. When I click it, it warns me about extra charges. I'm on Straight Talk, T-Mobile SIM - can I check this box and not worry? Straight Talk customer service doesn't appear to understand my question.

Thanks!

You can not data roam on Straight Talk. From their terms of service:
Mobile Web Services access will not be available while you are roaming outside of the Straight Talk GSM Network coverage area.

I guess I don't understand data roaming then. So if it's not available, I should be able to check that box and it won't do anything?

Sorry to do this to you OP but, I have been interested in the Nexus 4 for straight talk as well. I currently have Virgin Mobile, and Sprints service is HORRID up where I am (mountains, no mans land, etc.) So I was thinking of buying an AT&T micro sim for the nexus 4 and going with straight talk. Will my current phone number from Virgin Mobile switch over???

I'm not the OP, but I can tell you that there should be no issue porting your number from Virgin to ST. When you sign up for Straight Talk, you will have to give them the info on your Virgin Mobile plan to authorize it. Then you wait for the switch. Simple stuff.

Alright! Thanks! I am just getting so sick of Virgin Mobile... plus I would really love a Nexus 4 (Currently have a Kyocera Rise and I do love that) I just really really am getting sick with my service.

How can I tell if I am in HSPA+ mode? Set up my phone today with ST AT+T and not sure.
Icon just says H.

It will not say H+ in the status bar, only H in stock Android. You can go to about phone and look under status to see if its HSPA+ or not. It will also fluctuate between HSPA and HSPA_ depending on what your doing I have found

Correct.

Roaming requires two things.

1. Your phone must seek it out. Phones can be set to not roam just in case your carrier has extra charges associated with roaming.
2. The carrier you are attempting to roam to has to recognize your phone as a valid client and offer it service.

You might as well not bother with #1, because #2 ain't gonna happen in your case.

If you choose T-Mobile, I hope you never have to roam, as roaming with T-Mobile prepaid = no data.
