Default How setup Google Voice on N4 without SIM card?

I haven't decided on which plan I want for my Nexus 4 yet and I wanted to try out Google Voice VOIP calling. I'm trying to set it up on the N4 so I can test VOIP calling over wifi first. When I start up the Google Voice app, it asks me for the number of this phone. Some questions:

    1. Does it matter what number I choose?

    2. If I choose my current activated cell number (that's a Nexus S), will that stop calls from going through to my Nexus S?

    3. Will I be able to receive calls on my Nexus 4 via VOIP (assuming I hook it to Google Chat)?

    4. Will hooking Google Voice to Google Chat screw up my current cell phone?

    Thanks!

Google voice app don't have voip service build in. IGVoice is a call forwarding service.

You have to install grooveIP to make Google voice a voip service.

    1. chose phone number you are going to use
    2. No

But with #1, I don't know what phone number I will eventually use (since TMobile might give me a diff. number if I don't port it).

I know that I need sipdroid or GrooveIP to try voip calling. Are there any others besides SipDroid and GrooveIP?

you just create a new number w/ GV, once you do that, go to setting and have phone forward to your gmail acct. you can test it by having ppl call you at the number Google assigned you. your tmo number is seperate. what gv does is forward all your call to your tmo phone number. it is a forwarding service. currently, only sprint has gv integaration where your sprint number is also your gv number. that's one thing i miss from leaving sprint. talkatone is another app you can use.

Also, I believe you must list an actual physical phone number for them to forward to, whether you plan to have it forwarded or not.

I am using Talkatone on my N7... so I would think that it would work with the N4...

yup, the inital setup, you will def need to forward to a number, but you can disable forwarding afterward.

OK, how does it work with the Google Chat integration? Will it allow both VOIP and also getting calls normally on my current phone?

Has anybody used Voice+ or Google Voice Callback, how would that work, or could you even use it?

With Google Voice you get a number and you give that number to all your friends etc. Then when you get your T-mobile or whatever number you go to your Google Voice settings page and add your cell phone with it's number. Check the box to forward your Google Voice calls to your cell phone. Now anyone calls your Google number they get your cell phone, anyone calling your cell number gets your cell phone. While in settings check the Google Chat box. Then download Groove IP Lite for free or Groove IP for .99 cents (no adds) and run it on your phone/tablet. Now since I have this setup on tablet but not my phone yet (current phone is a crippled Tracfone that can't run Groove IP) I am not sure about how to answer or select which phone/line to answer. If you are working without a sim card then you are working the same as I currently am with my tablet. On my tablet when I get a call my cell phone rings, the bluetooth house phone (which is connected via bluetooth to my cell phone) rings, my tablet rings and I have the option of answering with my tablet using Groove IP over my wifi connection, answering my house phone (in whichever room I am in) or going to my cell phone where ever it is and answering it. I only give out one number and it is the Google number (that way if my cell company changes or my cell number changes the number I give out doesn't change and I don't worry about porting numbers). By the way last month I disconnected my AT&T land-line and will be dropping it. This system seems to work as good as any cell phone I've seen does most of the time and it works better than the old phone system I grew up with.

This doesn't answer your question but if you are trying to make wifi calls, this worked perfectly for me on my N4 w/o sim card...
