Default Nexus 4 signal bars say "G"

I'm familiar with H and E but not G. What exactly is this ? I had it today... I did some Googling and didn't really come up with a clear answer.

If this thread T Mobile 3G/4G signal indicator. is correct, "G" means you are in GSM/2G mode.

Yes, G is GPRS. The slowest of the slow. You basically won't be able to load much of anything.

Not quite. G is GPRS. What's usually known as "2G" is EDGE, or E.

If you're on GPRS that usually means something is wrong, or you're in a super rural area. There aren't many major areas of the country that still have GRPS-only service coverage I dont think. You'll still find plenty of places with EDGE-only, but GPRS is pretty much gone.

I'm not sure what secret settings you are referring to. But the G hasn't happened since.

I'm on Straight Talk with an ATT Sim, I do get strange timeouts even with full coverage but the bars remain H about 98% of the time. Rarely do I see E and the G was a onetime event.
