Root is specific to the ROM, many (most) stock(ish) ROMs come pre-rooted.

If the real goal here is to return to a completely stock device, then restore images are you best option. They'll return the device to the state it was in when you took it outa the box, except for the bootloader being unlocked. You'll have to manually relock that if you want it to be. You'll need to re-root the device afterwards though. Everything on the sdcard will also be wiped.
