I do believe that you have to go into Facebook and change your mobile notifications.

You can always open the app and disable all notifications.

I removed it but I'm also rooted. Only way to remove it.
You can go into Facebook and go into the settings. You should be able to change the refresh interval for notifications and status updates.

remove facebook? I'm pretty sure you have to download it from the app store.
and go to accounts and get rid of syncing.

I was going to say that if you are not rooted then probably your best bet is to disable it through settings/apps, but I just checked and I don't have it listed at all so it must be possible to delete it without being rooted. So try that as others have suggested.
