I use ES also.

I found it because I wanted a way to play video files off my local NAS drive without copying over. It streams them nicely by giving you all the options of all your players to use.

BB has a file explorer?? i used BB for 3 years, this is news to me.

Yes bb does have a file explorer. If you go to media, menu button and hit explore..

Does anyone know if it is always necessary to restart my phone for changes to appear in other apps on the nexus 4?

ES works quite well on the PlayBook as well. Does a great job of streaming video and audio over my home WiFi network using simple sharing from an ancient WinXP box with a huuuuge HD. Ghost Commander is also pretty nice.
