Fairly new to the whole smartphone world, but I just updated my APN settings from what AT&T set as default. Thanks to other users on this great site, I'm getting a lot better/faster data speeds.

Who needs LTE. Not bad for being in the sticks about 35 miles from nearest big city.

Hm, I am not getting near that kind of speeds even with the updated APN. Did you call ATT to reconfigure your account for 4G non LTE phone?

No. I had an HTC Vivid, which was 4G/LTE. Just went into corporate store and got a micro sim card since the one from the Vivid was too big.

I have a request for you Williams448, some people who use this phone on at&t are not able to use data while on a phone call. would you mind making a normal phone call while your wifi is off and trying to do a speed test while on the call?

No problem. Results are interesting. Below tests were both done at home. First shows speed not on phone, second shows speed while phone is in use.

I bought T-Mobile sim just to try their network speeds, and guess what, I am getting insanely fast data speeds. 13-15 Mbps down. Oh I wish I wasn't tide up in ATT contracts with my family plan.

It is a myth that you need to call AT&T and change your plan from an LTE, to a smartphone plan. I'm convinced that most people just don't have the proper APN in place. I swapped sims from my GS3 to my Nexus 4, and only had problems until I got the proper APN. Once I got the correct APN, I was pulling 9-12mbps down on AT&T consistently.

What are you APN settings? Are you using the "phone" settings?

Here are my current APN settings:

    APN: pta
    mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
    mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
    MMS port: 80
    MCC:310
    MNC:410
    APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri

I didn't want to change my plan from the GS3/LTE plan to a 4g smartphone plan for a few reasons. 1. it's too much of a hassle, and 2. I didn't want to risk losing my unlimited data I've had since the first iPhone. Plus I just didn't believe that you'd really need to do so considering I can still get HSPA+ on my GS3 when LTE is out of range. I can verify that I regularly get speeds of 9-12mbps down with this APN, and AT&T still shows that I am using a GS3. If need be, you can change the APN from "PTA" to "PHONE" but PTA seems to work best for me. Hope that helps!
