Tap the 3 dots (settings) within the stock dialer & select "Add 2-sec pause" which inserts a comma.
UPDATE: You need to have at least 1 digit entered before that option will become available.

when putting the phone into a contact you just dial the sequence and when you want a pause or a wait, press the *# key to the lower left and it will bring up another keypad in which you can enter pauses and waits etc. I do this in the people app when entering the number in. As still1 says, it will look like a comma in the string
