So I had a Droid X before and I could easily choose for silent except for alarm mode...... With the Google Nexus 4 if I go into CLOCK > ALARM > SETTINGS there is NO option for an alarm in silent mode....
If I go to my main SETTINGS > SOUND > VOLUMES > I have the following 3 options with sliders from silent to full sound.... (1."Music video, games, & other media"... which I can turn the slider volume all the way down)..... Now here is the problem... (2. "Ringtone & notifications"... If I turn this all the way down then #3. "Alarms" slider is automatically forced to the silent position and will not move..)... thus I have to leave the #2 slightly on or I cannot us the #3 Alarms slider...

**I attached a pic of the ALARMS Slider circle being gray instead of blue showing that I cannot use it when Ringtone and notifications is turned all the way down**
So basically the only way around this I can find that notifications and calls won't wake me up is Every night I have to go into SETTINGS> SOUND> PHONE RINGTONE > and choose NONE... I then go SETTINGS> SOUND> DEFAULT NOTIFICATION SOUND > and choose NONE... Soo many steps and I know this can't be right? I have searched these forums and all over the internet and haven't found anyone with a similar problem?.... Help me please and I'm a newbie to this site so sorry if it's in the wrong place?? Thanks in advance! :'(

I noticed that I have an app called volume in my app drawer. Don't remember installing it so may be stock? Anyways, if you open it, you can set volume sliders for media, ring, notification, voice call, alarm, and system. all separate. Have a look for it.

It will work as long as your alarm is set..... I just tried it. Yay... I learned something new!

I?ve never had this problem before, just looked at my setting and I can adjust the alarm sound. Maybe you don?t have any alarms set? Maybe when alarms don?t exist the volume can?t be changed, if the alarms are turned off the volume can still be adjusted. Also maybe you don?t have a ringtone set for your alarm

Thanks for the suggestions.. but just to make sure I just went into my clock and set an alarm and then tried the VOLUMES slider and it is the same problem.. as soon as I turn the phone on Silent Mode or do SETTINGS >VOLUMES > Ringtones and Notifications.. The Alarm slider still goes to silent and is not adjustable.....

Also if I go into CLOCK> SETTINGS >ALARM VOLUME that slider is adjustable in silent mode... However after I slide it to a louder setting then hit ok it automatically is set back to silent... I guess I will download an app and hope it works... but I just wonder if my phone has a problem... since everyone else seems to have no problem with this? I love this phone but something as small and simple as the alarm is enough to drive me insane.

The Screen Shots are the Alarm Set first then tried to adjust the sliders in VOLUMES.. and the other screen shot is the slider after it automatically went back to silent immediately after I turned it all the way up in CLOCK > SETTINGS > ALARM VOLUME

That is very strange. I just tried it following what you did. I set an alarm (gave it a sound in the alarm settings and turned it on). Then I went into settings on the phone, sound, volumes, and slid both the media and ringtone volumes all the way down. My alarm volume stayed full. You have a bug maybe. Might need to try a factory reset.

I seem to be having the reverse problem to the OP. I'm using a GNex on 4.2.2 stock (also had this problem on custom ROMs too) but my volume control for my alarm is completely separated from the other volume controls. Regardless of if I'm on general, silent or vibrate the volume for my alarm doesn't change. I want for my alarms to be silenced when I turn to silent but they still go off at full volume.

Any ideas?

Same here; my alarm volume is completely independent of my ringtone volume, even if the latter is completely down. Definitely a bug or a user error of some sort.

Need help:
I have the same problem. When turning off the sound mode, it also turns off the alarm sound... So to avoid to be awaken, I am obliged to use the vibrate mode instead of the sound alarm. I guess it comes from the sound app... I have also tried to install alarm apps but failed... It is really annoying and I don't want to reset my phone... Any ideas to solve that problem?
