What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Here is explanation what I am curious about - [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]
Did you guys receive this update? I didn't, and what does this actually mean? FB will update itself without my knowledge?

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Yeah. Facebook needs revenue. They need people to be updated to receive those updates that includes advertisements and probably quarrying info that can be sold. If its not making everyone up to date then it's them trying to conceal what their updates are going to do that people won't like.
Many times when a company goes public it has a change in character. The Zuchberg never had a great degree of integrity to begin with so I'd be worried. You're Facebook profile picture could end up on the cover of a Chinese erectile disfunction commercial. :-)

I assume a lot of people will dislike this. Anyone got that update already?

It has prompted me for the update three times since force stopping. I will not be doing this update. My husband's note 2 has not been prompted at all.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
So is the version in the Play Store currently the original ("safe") one? I just installed FB a day or so ago. And I can't remember, but I may have gotten an "update" since then. (Not sure, since I usually just OK upgrades to apps I've been using). And just curious wouldn't the setting for installing from unknown sources block it? Which come to think of it I have enable from when I downloaded swype.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
This is a bad precedent to set and really annoying. Not that I use Facebook anyway as they are a highly duplicitous gatherer of personal data. Google is too but not nearly as much.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Easily solved, do not use the FB app. Just log in via your browser.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Based on a long history of privacy violations, I don't know why anybody thinks they can trust Facebook in the first place.

I haven't received the update notification, but this is what I would do if I did. Open your app drawer, tap on Downloads, and delete that update. The version in the Play Store is still the "old" (and official, as far as I'm concerned) version. No app will *ever* be allowed to update silently on my phone, and this FB update is a horribly sneaky way to try and implement that.
Remember: if you're not paying for a product, you are the product. Guard yourself accordingly, and only accept what you're comfortable with.

Except now Facebook can update the app on you phone anytime they want to without your knowledge or consent. If that's no problem, then you are good to go!

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
This means I just removed the app from my phone.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Facebook is nothing but trouble anyways for me. I get the no internet connection whenever I have location enabled on my phone. I have to turn location off which means other things won't work correctly. I think FB is going away on my phone today.

Untrue. You'll still need to accept updates to install them.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Not only is Facebook probably violating Play Store terms of service, but their app is behaving a little like malware. I would uninstall it immediately. It's YOUR phone, not theirs to corrupt.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
Looks like Facebook is doing it again, another silent update outside the parameters of the play store; I guess developer rules are only meant for some.

google just updated the policy to reflect this. so facebook will soon abandon it.

Re: What does this mean? (Facebook update bypassing the Play Store)
This is too much like malware. Especially when the update notification keeps coming back no matter how many times I dismiss it. I'm sure it's a harmless update, but it's the principle of the thing, Zuckerburg!
