4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
Some of you may have seen my posts here over the past 10 days, desperately trying to figure out why my Nexus 4 doesn't work with Gmail (push failures, out-and-out delivery failures). Last week I called Google and they immediately agreed to send me a new phone (the old one was hanging occasionally as well).
It arrived today. I set it up and started testing the push functionality, and guess what? It works way better. Not instant like my iPhone but it seems to be working.
After about an hour of testing I noticed a notification at the top. Guess what? It's the 4.2.2. update, downloaded and waiting to be installed. The last phone shipped with the 4.2.2. update. Needless to say, I want nothing to do with this update. I checked and the OS right now is 4.2
Can anyone tell me how to delete that update file without accidentally activating the updater? - 03-20-2013, 09:03 AM #2

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
The 4.2.2 update is more stable than 4.2.1 was. I'd let it install.

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
definitely do the update. 4.2.2 is the first version of 4.2 that feels as fast/stable as 4.1 was.

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
The fact your other phone already had 4.2.2 leads me to believe that maybe someone might have used it before and updated it and messed up your gmail app in some way? Possible I guess? You are a rare case that has had a gmail problem, period. No chance it is related to 4.2.2
Besides, a major value of the N4 are the updates! - 03-20-2013, 10:07 PM

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
Thanks for the responses guys. I'll respond in reverse order.
minnemike, you may be right! This phone was bought off Red Flag Deals. I only deal with very high feedback guys there, and the tape on the box seemed to be exactly the same as the tape which was on the box that Google just sent me as a replacement... but still you could be right!
'No chance' seems pretty definitive. I do understand that getting the updates right away from Google is a major benefit to the phone. I just spent so much time trying to solve my problems, and then I get this new phone, and it works, and the only thing that's different is the OS version... you can imagine that as a non-techie, it's hard for me not to make that correlation.
Still, there's clearly concensus here.Last edited by mset; 03-20-2013 at 10:25 PM.

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
I'll reply to this and the two above it. Thanks for the replies guys, and yes, I see that almost everyone says my concerns about 4.2.2. are misplaced. Please see the post above this for a partial explanation. It's just hard not to see the correlation, and this phone is working so much better than the last one.
Again, please understand - I spent 15 hours trying to solve my Gmail push issue. This new phone is working. The only difference is the OS version. It's hard fro me to click 'Install' on this 4.2.2. update. - 03-20-2013, 10:20 PM

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
I should say one other thing. Two nights ago, the night before the RMA arrived, I was talking to a manager at Google. He said something like 'I think your replacement phone is going to give you no trouble'. I flat out asked him if the replacements they send out are somehow checked or tested to make 100% sure they're solid and have no hardware issues. He kind of faded that question and juts said 'I've never heard of anyone having to do a saeond RMA'.
Any chance that RMA units are checked manually before shipping? Couldn't be, could it?Last edited by mset; 03-21-2013 at 03:24 AM.

Nah, I think it's just more likely the odds of getting a second lemon device are. so. low. that if you do get one you need to immediately go buy a lottery ticket.

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
Believe me, I know. I'm following along on the Z10 threads and it's pretty obvious when an issue is being seen by a lot of guys, indicating that it's maybe an OS/bug issue.
I've started a few threads about this and it's been mostly crickets chirping, except for guys saying 'I'm not experiencing that'. I don't know what to say. This RMA replacement is acting much better, but it still isn't even close to the push functionality I had with my iPhone. On that, test emails can actually arrive at the phone before they arrive in my desktop browser.
One thing that's for sure - battery life is better with 4.2.2 than with 4.2.
Absolutely love this phone and can't imagine going back to the iPhone. I guess I just accept it and go forward.
Thanks for the responses. - 03-21-2013, 09:39 PM #14If my post helped you out...please be kind and hit the "THANKS BUTTON."

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
Well..it actually downloaded itself. I'm stuck with the file waiting to be installed, anyhow. I restarted my phone and it didn't auto-install.
I know how dumb this seems to you guys. You didn't spend 15 hours trying to get push email to work on your devices, only to see it suddenly start to work on a device with a different OS. Coincidence? Maybe. Defective device the first time? Maybe.Last edited by mset; 03-21-2013 at 11:33 PM.

Re: 4.2.2 auto-downloaded, but I don't want to install it!
Here is one more tip - a bunch of the google services are so tied together that they might affect each other in strange ways - make sure you go through the google drawer of apps and start all of them and log into all of them at least once - and let them sync. There may be other services waiting in line before the push scripting sync that hog bandwidth. You can disable them later if/when needed, but I would start sorting all the phone issues out at first with everything as google intended it to be.
