Is this phone supposed to get really hot?

It seems whenever I'm playing games on my nexus 4'or anything semi intensive, the phone gets rather hot. Particularly around the upper left corner of the phone, up where the camera lens is.

I know some users complained of heat, but honestly there's times where it feels like it going to burn my finger if I leave it on the screen too long. Or it's at least uncomfortable.

Is this worth reporting and trying to exchange? Or is this something that I'm going to notice on any nexus 4 phone and I just need to get over it? Do you think the later model nexus 4s resolved this issue?

Warm, yes... uncomfortable, no and it's definitely not supposed to be hot enough to where you're concerned about injury. A case might help a little with the back, but not with the screen and that's not a solution, just a band aid. It's probably worth calling support and asking them about it.

When gaming (need for speed) for awhile mine gets pretty hot but not burn your finger hot, I just think of it as running pc specs minus the cooling fan!
But it shouldn't be too hot, maybe monitor its internal temp (if you can)

As it happens, NEC just unveiled the Medias X 06E, which apparently is the world's first liquid-cooled smartphone.

Mine definitely gets warm/hot in that exact area if I'm playing a graphically intensive game. Just the nature of the phone. If yours is getting hot enough that it's actually harming you, however, that's not normal and you should contact Google.

The Snapdragon processor onboard the N4 has an operating range of 0* - 70* Celsius. http://test.inforcelive.com/document/datasheet/IFC6400_Datasheet_001763_Rev A.pdf

If you overheat the chip, there are fail safes in place to force a shutdown and your phone will power off.

You might want to try franko.Kernel Updater. You would need to be rooted. If you install the updater and get the custom kernel you can do two things:
  1. When the phone gets hot, you can enter the franko.Kernel Updater App and check on the CPU temperature to see how close it is to the limit.
  2. Set a custom Thermal Throttling Threshold to reduce CPU clock speed at a given temperature to reduce heat build up. This might cause some lag in intense 3D games, but could possibly save you from a hardware meltdown.

Another option is to install a Terminal App and run the "top" command to see if something is hogging CPU and not shutting down properly.

You feel it more because the back is glass, meaning it absorbs the heat more. The plus side is it helps dissipate the heat from inside the phone quicker. The negative side would be what you describe, you feel in on the hand/fingers more. I don't think it will get hot enough to burn you, but if it gets to uncomfortable, that could be a sign that you need to put the phone down and take a break from it.

It feels like it gets overly warm to hot even after only 10 minutes of gaming or less.

I'm not sure how hot it normally gets gaming since I don't do any gaming on my phone. I have had it get fairly hot on me after a couple hours of web browsing. I would do as someone else suggested, install in app that will monitor the temperature and this will tell you if it is overheating or not. Nobody can really tell you yay or nay unless you provide a figure.

So it get to 38.2 degree Celsius.

This was doing brief gaming such as dead trigger, dark avenger, and dungeon hunter 4

Is this normal temperature?
