Ok so can someone explain these numbers to me. I must be missing something. Based on my screenshot of the storage screen, I should be seeing around 4GB more free space than I am. I did the math. Rounding up, all the space used equals 4.99 GB, it says I have 3.46 GB free and 12.92 GB total. Problem is, 4.99 + 3.46 = 8.5... not 12.92...

You have used 8.5 GB of your total space. Although you bought a 16GB phone you only have a little over 12GB available to use. So that is where your missing 4GB's are.

Most, if not all, would be Android itself.

Yeah, so, unless my i'm more mathematically confused than i thought, Used storage + free storage should add up to "total storage" in my case it does not. I understand that the OS and whatnot takes up a good bit of space, that's why I'm using the 12.9 as the goal number.

I'll double check to see if I have backups lurking anywhere, I thought i deleted them. Where would things have to be stored to not show up in one of the "used storage" categories in settings? on the root of the drive?

If you've rooted and made back ups or installed other ROMs, you may have things stored that aren't showing up. This will take up space.

Look in sdcard/0 on the computer if you can.

Looks like available space reporting is messed up. The chart (which is correct) shows the available space being more than the used space by apps.

I have tried rebooting, flashing new ROMS, data wiping and double checked, no backups to be found, unless they're hidden somewhere, which I can't imagine why they would be.

When you flash a new rom, and older information is kept, it goes into a place that is hidden. In my system it's in the sdcard/0 folder. I had a LOT of stuff in there and it did not appear in the Storage chart, and it wasn't deleted with a wipe or factory reset.

You can see it if you go into the phone via the computer.

I checked in there, I had assumed there were some backups lurking in there. Couldn't find anything, checked in all (admittedly, only like 15 or so) folders that appear in the root of storage on the phone.

I don't have my Nexus with me (I'm running the S3 today), but I have noticed that my S3 has an "Emulated" folder and a Storage folder that has some things that I think were duplicates.

Sorry, I don't have any other fixes.

I had this happen on my Nexus 7 I used to have. I could not figure out what was taking up so much space. I ended up having to flash a stock rom to correct it.

Clear ur cache data in that picture you posted. Then after you do that doenload clean master and clean ur phone. Then perform a cache partition reset and u should have all your memory back.
