Stock rooted N4 suddenly experiencing frequent and severe lag

Starting a few days ago, my stock rooted 4.4.2 Nexus 4 decided it was going to just start being a jerk. The phone's been running flawlessly, however suddenly it decided that it would just mow through my battery one day (after half a shift of work passing without issues). After that it started hiccuping when doing some tasks, but not very badly. Figured a few restarts and I'd be good.

A few days later, again after most of my work shift without issues, suddenly it's like "Hey buddy, I'm just going to like... Stop doing stuff every few moments and make you wait." I'm seeing higher battery drain than normal, and every task I do is impacted. Scrolling through anything. Typing on Swiftkey. Opening Hangouts was nearly impossible at times. So I started using Hello SMS, which is even worse. And I don't have a lot of text messages saved, so it's not like I've got 10,000 messages to load.

I didn't make any changes to the phone. I don't recall installing any new apps. It just started happening.

The closest thing I can think of is that I turned on that new Facebook Nearby Friends thing, but even after doing that, things were fine for a few days. I disabled it, and no change in behavior.

Here's some BBS screenshots:

Any thoughts?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I was seeing odd behavior with the Google Contacts syncing, it seemed to have been stuck or something. Not sure if that's still going on, looks like it might be from time to time.

Here's some GSAM screenshots:

I quickly looked through the screens you posted and I noticed that in BBS the highest CPU clock (1.51GHZ) was used most of all. Maybe it has something to do with that? Also, check the stock Android battery reader thing and post a screen of that, maybe that will help.

I only installed BBS after the issue occurred to try to look at the wakelocks in detail. Edit: Misread that. But yes, it was the fact that the CPU was being hogged, for sure. The stock battery app gave the same response as others, Android System/Android Kernel were the top offenders.

I found the problem though (I believe). Turns out that the Google Contacts sync was stuck and constantly running.

Resolutions steps:
  • Settings > Accounts > Google > tap name
  • Turn off all sync items
  • Restart
  • Turn on all sync items
  • Immediately restart again
  • Issue resolved

Behavior is now back to normal, items are synced again properly and not indefinitely running (last I checked), and battery life is now as I expect it to be as well.
