How can I enable sync on my nexus 4 with android lollipop (5)?

due to battery issues since Kit Kat,I decided to disable auto sync because it syncs many times during the day and drains the nexus battery...now it tells me sync is not in service ...before lollipop I had a menu item "SYNC NOW" now the menu only option is to "CANCEL SYNC" which tells me SYNC IS OFF...I really should find a way to get this google phone un-rooted...Please help...

Why not put a widget on your home screen? The built in Android power widget will work, as will any number of auto-sync toggles from the Play Store. Turn on all of your auto-sync options and place the widget is on your screen. Then tuoggle auto-sync off. After that, you can just turn it on for a minute when you want things to sync, then turn it off again.
