Which phone to update from a Nexus 4?

I've owned my N4 for over two years, and I was quite happy with the phone for a while.... until I encountered the dreadful Sleep of Death. Together with the random spike in temperature, random battery drainage, and a few other problems, I'm looking around for another phone. There are just way too many phones on the market and I'm honestly confused with all the options. Some of my criteria are:
- Less than $500
- Not too big (like a phablet... since I run with my phone)
- Hopefully will work fine for the next 3 years
- Decent battery
- Memory card available

I wasn't a fan of the Nexus 6 since it was too big for my taste (and also for my arm on runs). A few phones that came to my mind are the Samsung S5 or the HTC One M8. Does anyone have other phone suggestions? Are there usually sales/ promotions on phones later in the year?

Moto g would be my suggestion, especially with a new one coming with a s615

Consider the OnePlus One. It's atop my short list as I look to replace my N4 for the same reasons you are.
