Google Nexus 5 - Can't sign into Google now?

Hi all,
I'm experiencing an issue where I try to open Google now and it doesn't give me the option to sign in. It just pulls open my recent search history. Has anyone else seen this? If so, how do I get around it?

I read the Intro to KitKat free book that was published in Google Play Books, and found that all I had to do was turn it "On". I did a search in the app, clicked the menu button that came up in the subsequent window, went to settings, and turned Google Now on.

So, maybe no one will read this, but just in case someone does, that's how I got it to work.
