    Default How To Transfer Videos?

    Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I wasn't able to find any information anywhere on the site or really much of anything else on Google.

Are you guys able to transfer video from say a laptop to your Nexus 5?

I've tried to transfer files via USB connection into the Nexus 5 > Internal storage > Movies folder but it's not being recognized by the device when I look in the Play Movies app. I've tried this with a .AVI file and a .MP4 file and neither were recognized.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers!

The Play Movies app will not allow you to play locally stored movies. It only works with movies you have bought or downloaded via Google Play. Try MX Player from the play store to play movies but there are lots of others available too.

Tap the 3 dots in the upper right and choose personal video.

Does that actually work though because whenever I've tried, it gives me the option to find a video by a variety of methods including looking at local storage as well as in the cloud. Having chosen a file to play it then pops up the familiar Complete action using message and then a list of apps that can play the video, none of which is Play Movies. Tried with avi and mp4 and neither work for me on any of my devices?

It could just be me though!

I was about to recommend MX player as well. The stock player is limited in terms of recognizable file formats. Give MX a try and let us know how you like it.

Agree, and next time Google updates, and MX player stops working for a few days, BS Player is good too, as are a few others.

Yes as long as the movie is in a supported format. I just copied an .MP4 file to the movie folder and chose the stock player when prompted.

MX Player stopped working for me. "Incompatible Android Version" or something like that so I updated to the latest VLC which is a beta but seems to work super duper well.

Copy File via USB to MOVIES folder
    Load VLC
Viola! It is in the MOVIES section

Both suggestions by quiksilver53 and patruns worked for me. Thank you both.

Has anyone been able to Chromecast any "Personal Video" selections made. I hit Google Play Movie, fire up Chromecast (see on TV it is connected), but when I tap the 3 dots and choose my personal video, Chromecast does not perform and TV is still at the connected panel. The WiFi for Nexus 5 and Chromecast are the same, Netfilx and other apps work, just not from a peronal video.

That won't work because on Android, when using the play movies app, chromecast streams from the web. Since your video is stored locally, it can't be streamed.

One option would be to upload your video to your youtube account (don't set it to private - set it to either public, or the option where only the people who have the URL can view it) - then, you can cast from youtube app on your phone to chromecast.

Thanks, that explains. Wonder how long it takes CyngenMod folks to create ROM that allows local content streaming to Chromecast.

I transfer video files using ES File Explorer over WiFI. I exxport of my Videos directory using SAMBA (that's a Shared Folder for you WIndows users) which is visible under LAN on ES File Explorer. To play videos I use either MX Player, ES Media Player or Video Player. My Videos directory is also exported by my DLNA server which makes it possible for the DLNA server on my TV to play them. I'm using rygel on Linux as my DLNA server but there is a DLNA server on WIndows 8 which is on be default for you WIndows users (don't know if WIn7 has one). There are a lot of DLNA servers available for Android which in theory would allow you to serve video from the Nexus 5 but I haven't figured out if any of them work.
