It requires you to be rooted, but the xposed framework really is the must have app simply because it enables so much customization. Coming from the iPhone though, just be careful, nobody is vetting the xposed framework modules.

There's an entire forum on this site for apps. It's not just about apps specific to nexus but for android in general. You should check that out because it will be a more comprehensive list and users may not respond here as much because this type of thread has been created a lot of times. After a while people just ignore. Check out the apps forums you'll get some good ones. But just to start you off:

    Greenify
    Titanium backup
    SMS backup
    Root explorer
    Mr number
    Wake lock detector

The one thing you can't miss... Android central app LOL
No really, get foxfi. It kinda diverts your regular data into the hotspot do you don't pay extra.... But if you're on Sprint you'll need to install this apk to install it because sprint blocked it from Sprint phones.

    1 - Nova Launcher - https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...launcher&hl=en
2 - Solid Explorer (or any file manager...Astro is a good free one)
3 - Box.com and Dropbox and Google Drive
    4 - Evolve SMS - https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...olve_sms&hl=en
    5 - Swiftkey - https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...swiftkey&hl=en

    I'd also consider:

Team Battery Bar and/or Battery Widget Reborn (I use both).
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...tterybar&hl=en
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...orn.beta&hl=en

    Taptu (awesome news reader).
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....streams&hl=en

Display Brightness (a really neat brightness control widget that lets you slide brightness from any screen).

What does this app do that the standard Tethering/hotspot functionality in the N5 doesn't? Just curious, as I currently just turn on the tethering function in my N5 to connect my tablets to, etc, when I'm away from home so was wondering what this one did that I was missing (as it's not obvious, at least to me, from looking at the website!!).

Nothing. I bought it and was disappointed. It just uses your normal hotspot functionality. Anyone buying this to try to bypass carrier restrictions will be disappointed. The carriers can still "see' your tethering use with this.

This app will let you tether and still mask tethering use from your carrier. The catch is that it requires root access. But it is easy to use and works as advertised.

I rooted simply to use this app. And it is really nice not ever having to worry about carrier tethering limits anymore. It is as easy to use as the native hotspot is.

    My main essentials are always,

    • Any well reviewed file manager
    • The app for whatever your favorite cloud service is
    • Your favorite video, music, and photo apps if you don't use the built in defaults. On Nexus devices I typically stay with the defaults except for videos, for which I use MX video player
    • Gtasks

Everything after that is pure preference for me. Flipboard, Tapatalk, and Google Plus are my most often used apps, which I use to get all my tech news and discussion every day. Other than those, I have
    • my banking app,
    • apps to stream media over my network like Airstream,
    • Air Droid for wireless network file management,
    • launchers,
    • car mode apps (Carhome Ultra on my N5, OEM versions on my other phones)
    • Better Dashclock widget
    • Evernote
    • Keepass
    • Moonreader (tablet only)
    • Tunein Radio
    • Torrent app
    • Udemy
    • Umano
    • Wakelock detector
    • Wifi File Explorer
    • A few games (currently Clash of Clans and Castle Clash)

various others that I only use very occasionally.

I neglected to mention built in apps like Chrome, Maps, Gmail etc since we all already have those.

Android Central App - The widget makes it easy to keep up with the news.
Feedly, or some sort of RSS-based news reader
Google Authenticator - You're all using two step authentication right? RIGHT?
BeWeather Pro - Still my favorite weather app
Dashclock Widget - Works with a ton of other apps. The only lockscreen widget that I want to use.
Device Manager - Because security is great.
GSam Battery Monitor - Better Battery Stats is good too. Both work with Dashclock Widget.
Perfectly Clear - Make those good pics you take even better.
SkipLock - I love this app. No lockscreen when connected to bluetooth devices and wifi networks of my choosing.
Super Hexagon - No better quick time wasting game IMO. You'll quickly become both addicted and frustrated simultaneously.
Timely - I have multiple devices. This works great.
WhatsApp - Cross platform (but not mutli-device) chat client.

These all get installed on all of my primary devices. All but WhatsApp and Authenticator get installed on all my secondary devices.
