Default I finally ordered my Nexus 5!

WOOOOOO!!!! I have waited months for this moment! I do have some questions before it shows up. I bought a Ballistic SG MAXX case but it has not yet shipped. I am wondering if anyone has real use with this. Every once in a blue moon I drop my phone and my Otterbox has saved it many times. I wanted to get something as close to the Otterbox as I could. I will also be getting AIO Wireless as my carrier. Is there any special settings I need or is it mostly just plug the SIM and go?

The other issue I have is that my phone is archaic so there is no way of transferring my tons of contacts easily. I have been getting on my Google Contacts page and have started adding them. Before I spend several hours getting them all in, will the Nexus transfer all of those contacts into my phone once I log into my account? I also do online ordering and such every now and then, hence I use a VPN. I am wondering that if I were to lose my phone or someone stole it if I would be able to track it with the VPN turned on. I also would like to get insurance on my phone since it was $400. AIO protect only covers phones bought directly from them. Do you guys use any insurance for your phones?

If you guys have any app suggestions or any tips/tricks, please let me know. I am finally dumping my old turd iPhone. Droid for lif3!

The contacts should sync if they're connected to your Google account. As to the ease of network access you will need to input the APN settings for AIO wireless. As to the case or insurance I have no answers though I would suggest turning off hotword detection if you're going to use the Google now launcher. Aside from that congratulations and welcome to the nexus master race.

    Welcome to Android Central
Post above got everything pretty much right. Congrats on the Nexus 5.
For future reference, it's Android, not Droid.

Welcome to Android Central, and excellent choice with the N5! Are you asking about if you can transfer your contacts directly from your old phone to the new N5? Is your old phone an iPhone, or a feature phone of some sort? There are usually ways to export your contacts from a non-Android phone to a .CSV file or a multiple .VCF file, which can then be imported directly into your Android phone's Contacts, or imported into your Google Contacts on your desktop. I can give you more details if you let us know what your old phone is.

I bought an N5 from Google Play, and immediately bought a SquareTrade insurance policy for $125, which provides coverage for 2 years (that's about $5/month). The insurance covers any kind of damage or defect, but doesn't cover theft. It gives me piece of mind, because it's just too easy to drop this thing, and even with a good case, things can break easily if it falls just right.

What UJ95x was referring to is that "Droid" is actually a trademarked brand name referring to only certain Android phones (like the Droid Ultra, Droid Razr Maxx, Droid Incredible, etc.)--I think it's a Verizon thing.

If you have an iPhone, this might be the easiest way to get your contacts over to Google. Once you've synced your iPhone contacts to Google Contacts, they should then sync automatically to your N5.

    1. I hate 3rd party insurance. I would never do it. Heck, unless it's car, life or health insurance I'm not a big fan. Insurance companies are there for one reason: to rip you off as best they can. They will try to find a way around helping you out. Google's warranty is awesome enough that with that Ballistic case I wouldn't worry.

    2. Contacts should auto sync. It's the amazing thing about a Google account. You have everything connected and synced the moment you type in your account. If you have an iPhone, there are apps/ways that will export your contacts your Google account.

    3. The APN settings should auto align. If not its a simple Google search to find them and change. APN settings are located Settings > More > Mobile Network > Access Point Names. You can always try a reset via the options button. That should pull the right settings from the SIM card.

    4. Google's device manager should still work without a problem on a VPN connection. I don't see why it would interfere. The data would just be routed to one more server + be encrypted before it hit you.

    5. If you feel like you may want to root in the future I would seriously recommend unlocking the bootloader before you do anything as this is something that has to be done when rooting and it does a full erasure of the device.

I find it a little disconcerting that Square Trade doesn't cover theft. Makes me wonder if their service is a bit of a sham. Does the Google warranty cover damage, loss, theft, etc? As for the contacts, I can access them if I Google "Google contacts."(LOL imagine that.) So I am guessing that it will just sync from that list which is fine with me. It is pretty easy to add to it.

BTW, I have always called Android phones "Droids."

Warranties never cover theft--only defects. Asurion, which provides insurance for Verizon phones (and maybe others, I'm not sure), does cover theft, but it's about twice as expensive.
