Default Recent Google Play Services update drops battery life

There are many complaints about this across different devices; my Note 10.1 w/JB is also experiencing it.

When the screen's off and the phone's idle, Google Play Services has multiple processes running in the background (mainly location services) that knock 3-5 % off the battery life every hour for me. This happens despite me disabling all location services. I've turned off every other background app as a test and this still happens. It's really annoying because Google forces you to download this update and YouTube requires it as well. You can temporarily force stop the different processes by going into running apps but they eventually turn back on again. The wifi icon constantly has the data upload arrow flashing when the processes aren't disabled and this is what drains the battery. I hope Google swiftly addresses this annoyance with a new update.

You can always try logging out and logging back in in Accounts in settings - it's a common fix for a common problem. Google Play Services is required for Maps, Play Store, YouTube, and most other 'Googlely' apps.

So just log out of Google services and log back in? My battery life took a nose dive yesterday for some strange reason.

I have not noticed any decrease in battery life of late. When it's on wifi and not in use, the battery line is essentially flat - I can't even tell if I'm losing any battery from that. I have location services on.

I did the whole log out in thing, waste of time. There is something eating my battery and looking at what is eating my battery hasn't changed since last October when I bought this phone.

Are you using the battery information from Settings? Try a different battery app. Better Batter Stats is good, but you have to pay.

It is much better at pinpointing what is causing the issue. Factory reset may fix it if you're willing to do that. Do NOT clear Google Services data - some recommend this but don't listen to them. That will cause some serious problems and a factory reset may not be optional at that point.

Edit: I am incorrect. You don't have to pay for the XDA download version:

I had been experiencing the same thing. The battery stats will say that Google Services is using over 40% of the battery when it has been idle.

so I did a system reset last night and am just now up and battery is fully charged. Google Play Services no longer appears at least for the time on my battery use list. It never was more than 5%...will download that new battery app though!

I've had some hard-to-track battery drainers from time to time that disappear after a reboot. I think the longer you go between reboots, the higher the chance that some app or service update get into a weird state until the phone is restarted. Reminds me of Windows updates and how some of them force you to reboot after the update is installed.
90% of my abnormal battery drain issues seem to point to either Google Play Services or Search, which all normalize after a reboot.

After several reboots, the battery life seems to be more stable now. Hopefully it stays that way.

Google Play Services only shows up when I move to ART, however I've seemed to corrected what is wrong for the time being with the System Reset and my battery life. Time will tell, out and about today so we'll see
