Phone turns off after being dropped

Hi,
Every time my Nexus 5 is being dropped from about 3 feet or more it turns off.
Is that normal?
Can I somehow avoid that?

I wouldn't say it's normal, but it does happen from time to time with many phones. Do you have a case on it? Don't mean to sound rude, but you should be more careful with it
