Maps chewing up battery even after being disabled and in aircraft mode

Google Maps is just annihilating my battery very quickly, showing the most battery usage by far at over 20%. This continues to happen after stopping the app, clearing all data, turning off location, disabling the app (which installs the original factory version - I can't seem to get rid of it altogether) and putting it in Aircraft Mode. With ALL these things Maps is still chewing up the battery! What can possibly be happening here? As useful as Maps is I just want to completely delete it off my phone at this point, the battery overhead cost is just not worth it. Is there any way I can completely kill the app?
