AT&T won't be messing with the updates because their boot screen animation is on its own partition, separate from the ROM. When updates are available from Google, they will still come to you as if it were a Nexus 6 from the Play Store.

I haven't exactly understood the criticism of it "not being a real Nexus".

Because the whole point of the Nexus line is that the phones are completely unmodified by the carriers. No branding, no bloatware. It was created for developers and runs pure Android, no embellishments.

I'm quite aware of what nexus was and currently is...thanks for the history lesson. Funny Google doesn’t even mention anymore the word “developer” at any point on the Nexus 5, 6, 9 pages.
