Has anyone tried or done any comparisons to see if turning off the data encryption on the disk improves battery life by any measure.

Yup, it does, but doubt it'll be noticeable unless you read/write files all day long. Performance is affected (again, not noticeably) and since the system is doing extra efforts when the disk is encrypted, it's only logical that it'll also consume more battery. As to how much more, though, that's debatable. Here, read these, they're interesting
