Sideloading 5.1 on a Nexus 6 is discouraged - regardless of the OS on the PC. Wait for the OTA. (Or look on XDA for a captured OTA file - that might work, since it's the same file you'll get if you get the OTA.)

The OTA zip package is the same as the OTA and I have had no issues side loading for years. As long as you get the drivers installed and the computer recognizes your device it is pretty low risk. I used a vista computer before and now a windows 8.1.

Anybody on here who's tried appears to have bricked their phone (myself included, see other threads). There are no known solutions to getting the phone usable again.

See these threads for more information:

I sideloaded 5.1 on OSX with Yosemite with no problem. Can't say I had any of these problems. Been running Yosemite since it was released and been running 5.1 since it was available.

Sorry to hear that. It was gutsy move to try on a Mac with Yosemite. I have still not even updated three of our macs which are still rocking Mavericks.

Thanks for the warning. What are your options now for your Nexus 6?

I sideloaded 5.1 onto mine with Windows 7 without an issue.
