Proper Flashing order

Hey all

Just got a replacement device from moto, and I wanted to flash build E for 5.1, I am currently running build E, but when I was flashing the newer build I forgot to have the phone update to 5.0.1, so I jumped from 5.0 straight to 5.1. Should I have updated to 5.0.1 then to 5.1? Or am I OK with going straight to 5.1?

You are fine. Flashing a factory image is the complete image for the device for that model.

Updates come in two flavors, and it normally depends on the manufacturer. Some have to be updated incrementally, first one version, then the next version, until you have the current version. Others are complete "install this part if it's not already updated" files. If your phone needed 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 flashed before flashing 5.1, the 5.1 flash would have "failed" somewhere around 25% (after finding out it wasn't looking at a 5.0.2 environment) and nothing would have happened to the phone. (It's what happens with most updates if the phone is rooted - and should happen with ALL updates if the phone is rooted.)
