    Default Stupid Question

This is going to sound really nooby, but when I get my nexus 7, if I unlock the boot loader and root, will I loose official google updates, or is that only if I replace the recovery?

It's only if you replace the recovery/alter the system at all. However its a piece of cake to re-flash the stock recovery if you need to anyways.
