Vicious circle with unlock/backup

I'm trying to root my stock N7 (4.2.1 JOP40D) and it's driving me crazy. I got the WUG toolkit (Nexus Root Tookit 1.6.2) and installed the drivers. I'm able to back up the apps, but when I try to back up data/media, it says I need to be rooted. When I try to use Root, it says I need to use Unlock first. When I try to use Unlock, it says the device will be wiped and I need to be backed up first. Aargh!!!

In another thread somewhere I saw a suggestion to use Titanium Backup. But TB says I need to be rooted, so I'm back in the same old ridiculous situation. Someone else suggested using Carbon, but as far as I can tell that backs up apps only, which I've already done.

Please, for the love of Larry, can I get some help?

If memory serves, once you root the device it will be wiped clean anyway. May take a little longer but I just copied my data and media folders I wanted to my desktop. Then continued with Wugs' kit.
