How long until N7 is rooted?

There's no exploit to find when rooting a Nexus device - unlock the bootloader, copy superuser.apk to /system - and you're rooted. It was designed to be rooted.

The real question that we should be asking is how long until there are custom ROMs for it. I see the wider nav bar and all I can think of is how many more icons I can cram down there.

I wouldn't be surprised if ROMs dropped within 24 hours of Google releasing the 4.1 source code.

I plan on unlocking/rooting first thing. Thankfully all those devs will iron out the details before we get ours .

The process of unlocking the bootloader is the same as any other nexus

Apart from deodexed and png-optimized builds (you'll need a custom recovery to flash), you'll need source for CM (and variants) which won't happen for another couple of weeks.
