Default OTG USB photo transfer using camera MTP no root required

You can transfer photos Nexus 7 without root if your camera supports MTP (media transfer protocol). I hooked my Olympus E-PL2 up to my Nexus using an OTG cable and choose MTP from the options on my camera and it worked fine. Just thought some people might like to know, I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere yet but I could have missed it.

A side note if you take photos in raw I'd recommend Photo Mate.

    Info on MTP

You can also transfer photos using OTG if your camera supports pictbridge transfer. Gallery will come up on the Nexus 7 as app to use. Just choose pictbridge on your camera and it is recognized by Nexus 7. Most digital cameras support pictbridge.

I'm going to purchase a Nexus 7 and want to be able to download pictures from my camera to the Nexus 7. I've read many posts that talk about an OTG cable. Can someone please tell me which cable I need to get.
    Thanks in advance

    I got one from eForCity

tested on mice, MTP, and Ethernet adapter.

Get more than one - they are cheap enough and cables will wear out / break with lots of use.

I understand most of this. My question is are ther devices that go from an SD card to the OTG cable? If power is required will the Nexus 7 be able to provide it? And my last one, if I transfer the images from my computer to an SD card will the format be right for the Nexus? I know there is a transfer app at the play store, so that part is OK.

You have two choices right now.
Leave your N7 in its default mode and use something like Nexus Media Importer = unrooted and read only external SD or HD available with specially capable apps and limited to certain file types.
Root your N7 and install something like stickmount = read and write like nornal storage media

SOME External HDs can be powered and read by the two solutions above but SOME can not. Most Fat and NTFS formats are readable - the impression I get is that most external storage devices can be read

If you can get powered external storage devices, you will be better off. Battery life on the N7 is always a concern.

I don't know about full size SD cards but the Kickstarted product Meenova allows for micro-SD cards to be accessed super easily on most OTG enabled micro USB ports and even includes a full size USB to female micro-USB so you connect the adapter to your PC without removing the card and putting into a card reader or any other adapters.
