The pics on my Xoom and GNex are very hi-res. I was really impressed. My magazines are GQ, Details, Esquire, Maxim, Geek, Car and Driver, Automobile and Motor Trend. I think your issue is Newsweek specific.

I like the resolution to much that I'm considering buying two Nexus 7s to use as magazines in my office. Or maybe two Nexus 10s for size.

Here's Newsweek on Zinio (they have sample articles):

All screenshots show the ereaders zoomed in to the max--fonts are actually the same size, it's just that Play can't zoom in very far.

I have two issues of a different magazine, one on each ereader app--this is Play:

    This is Zinio:

Like I said, the issue might stem from Play Magazines grouping the Nexus 7 with smaller devices (smartphones), instead of using tablet-appropriate resolution. You said you don't have your N7 yet, so I would just keep that in mind and avoid text-heavy magazines with Play. Most might not notice or care, but after reading high-res magazines with a different ereader, I definitely saw the difference--after all the N7 is a decent 1280x800.

Mantano is great. I've been looking for a reader for my other downloaded magazines but Mantano is the only one with smooth scrolling, good pinch to zoom, and it displays all my magazines by cover. Currently using Mantano ebook reader lite.

Problem is on Nexus 7 with Zinio You can't increase the Font or Text Size....... So don't waste your time or money.
