Are you saying that the Gmail app is showing phantom unread mail counts next to the inbox, or just the Nova (Tesla) Unread indicator next to the Gmail icon?

It's showing a count of one in the Gmail app. Doesn't always happen just every once in a while

Nova sometimes detects it before it shows up but it's there waiting if you check on another device or PC.

I find this happens to me too. Generally when I get messages from addresses I've muted.
    Try this:
In the Gmail app, do a search for IS:UNREAD

This filters out all messages, leaving only that one message the app is telling you is unread.

An even better way is to search in:anywhere is:unread

Taht pulls up unread email anywhere in your gmail, including spam and trash.

Open the Gmail app on your S3 and to to the Inbox screen (if not there already). Touch the search icon (magnifying glass at the top). In the search mail field, type 'in:anywhere is:unread'. Just the underlined text, no apostrophies. Perform the search.

I've been using Gmail for as long as I've been using Android... 4 years and counting... and I didn't know you could do this; I guess you learn something new everyday.

    Hi, Groid...

Excellent tip... it prompted me to do a bit of Googling around, and it seems there's a whole bunch of similarly useful Gmail search strings... as I discovered here...

It's all very 'old-school' quasi-command line sort of stuff, but tremendously useful nonetheless.

    Thanks once again, Groid.
