Audio stutters/degrades during continuous playback (not streaming)

Hi guys,

Awhile back I got a used 2012 N7. Loving it so far, and recently beefed it up with the Xenon HD custom rom.

One gripe, though. I like to use the tablet to play back some music and ripped MP3s of TV shows as I fall asleep. All the files are local to my N7. After an hour or so (sometimes more, sometimes less) of playback, the sounds become extremely garbled; kind of like stutter.

No issues with the files themselves, as I used the same ones on my old PlayBook and they played perfectly.

I'm extremely frustrated with not being able to resolve this issue. I've tried cache cleans, reboots, different players (ES Music Player, MX Player, BlackPlayer...) -- no matter what, the issue recurs.

I noticed the same issue on the stock 4.4.4 rom, so I don't think the custom rom introduced this.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. In all other respects, this tablet has been working well for me, but I'm unpleasantly surprised that it can't seem to handle offline continuous audio playback!
