No MIFARE NFC Support on Nexus 7 2013?

Hi,

I'd found a Stack Overflow answer that said the Nexus 7 (based on the posting day, the first version) supported the MIFARE NFC tags. So I bought some to play with. Well, both of the NXP apps tell me the "MIFARE Classic" tags are not supported.

Was the answer I read on SO wrong? Was it correct for the first-gen Nexus 7 but not valid for the 2013 model? Is my unit malfunctioning or defective? Is the "Classic" in MIFARE Classic significant? Is there are MIFARE "Modern?"

Update: Further searching confirms that the 2012 Nexus 7 did support MIFARE tags by virtue of using NXP's NFC chip while in the 2013 Nexus 7 they've switched to a Broadcom chip (see Google Completes Broadcom Transition with BCM20793M in 2013 Nexus 7).

If anyone has more information, I'd love to hear it.
