mirroring nexus 7 2013 to tv..is there any way to remove clock and shortcuts off screen

hi
absolute newbie and not very good at technology
i have just mirrored my nexus 7 to my sony tv but when watching a film the shortcut bars at the bottom are mirrored on the screen and the clock on the top.
i was wondering if there is an easy way to get rid of this. i can change the tv screen set up to zoom but this is not ideal.
i am watching it on the default player
is there another player that might be better?

if i bought the hdmi attachment i think its called a slimport would it play films full screen on my tv rather than mirror?
