Can't see contents of Nexus 7 on computer

I updated my Nexus 7 to Android 6.0.1. Then I plugged it into my Win 7 computer via USB as I've done many times before. In Windows Exploring, I can see the Nexus 7 but can't see any contents, nor can I copy a file to it. When I try to copy a file to it, I get "Cannot copy item - The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected."

Welcome to Android Central! When you connect the tablet to the computer, swipe down the notification panel and tap the USB icon, and make sure it's set to MTP. I think with Marshmallow, it defaults to Charge Only.

What notification panel? The only "notification" I see is "Sound & notification" under Settings, and that doesn't contain anything about USB.

Is there a way to set the default to USB = MTP? It seem really dumb to have to do this each time.
