Help please (old guy) Nexus 7 2nd (newbie) IT Professional (Unix):

Can't get any USB Camera App to recognize Camera attached.

1. Nexus 7 2nd Generation
2. USB OTG Cable
3. USB "Y" cable to add power to Camera
4. USB power source
5. Three different Cameras from cheep to High end (all working on laptop):

All apps I have tried say basically the same thing: No Camera Attached.

Thank you

I don't have a USB camera to compare with so from that aspect I won't be much help. Have you already confirmed that USB storage devices work correctly using your existing setup?

You can try various apps like:

Do I Have OTG? https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...etails?id=com.btssm.doihaveotg&token=IyUIlNDx
OTG Troubshooter https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...d=com.homesoft.otgtroubshooter&token=K4u7MfCL
USB Host Diagnostics https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...u.chainfire.usbhostdiagnostics&token=detVmrqI
USB OTG Checker https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...tails?id=com.app.usbotgchecker&token=UOWk2wIr

to check things out. IIRC I used USB Media Explorer https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...om.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&token=SHb0kxbj (a paid app by one of the above developers) to actually manipulate content on my flash drives and HDDs.

It would be helpful if you provided a list of apps that you tried to save someone else the hassle of reproducing your efforts - you can use something like Share Apps https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...?id=com.theronrogers.shareapps&token=J4opqPeB to do that, assuming you still have the apps installed.

When I attach the Nexus 7 to my laptop, my Laptop (WinXP) installs "MTP Device" automatically, but when I go to "My Computer" folder there is no new storage device.

Am I looking in the wrong place (My Computer)?

Otherwise I would say it is not working correctly. Please advise.

I will try the list of apps you provided:

1. Do I have OTG? (YES, OTG is supported on this device.)
2. OTG Troubleshooter? (Mixed response)
a. first try it passed all but "No USB Devise detected in Android"
b. second try it passed "USB HOST Support" and failed everything else
3. USB Host Diagnostic? failed
4. USB OTG Checker "System NOT Detect USB OTG Signel"

Camera Apps tried:
1. USB Camera
2. CameraFi
3. USB WebCamera
4. USB External Camera
5. Dashcam

Thank you

Did you have your OTG cable and a USB storage device connected when you ran that app? If so, the output should have looked something like this
78dc0074ba1be41a1b882bc06846ae55.jpg
which shows that a device was connected. And if you looked in Settings -> Storage & USB you should have seen something like this
a0b13041a7fa328cf9ff9135563c4995.jpg
(note the lower portion of the screen which shows the USB storage device).

Let's forget the stuff about your computer for the moment - it's irrelevant to the USB OTG issue. We can come back to that once we at least know that storage devices are working properly.

Same question as previous - this app expects (and prompts for) the OTG cable and device to be disconnected at the start, and it should look like this
74609dae6b4f05df301fa0a1959ecf87.jpg
then you connect the OTG cable and device and it should detect them and show
03d3ec3939b12ed9e9eeac10e7bb8089.jpg
and if you observe the Notification Shade you'll see a little USB icon and when you drag down you'll see something like this
dbc5d34e71d78f6e6a89bc9af79d96bd.jpg
If you don't see something very similar to these results there's probably something wrong with your OTG cable and/or USB storage device.

3. USB Host Diagnostic? failed
Same as before - when you select 'Start diagnostics' you should see
1e17fb15dae3022264d3b59876d89bce.jpg
and after connecting the OTG cable and device, counting to ten and selecting the Back button you should see this
0e5ee70b37626f260fbb603a0aceda51.jpg
(note the three 'Yes' results under the 'Android API' heading). If it didn't detect a device but your OTG cable was good you should have seen

Do I have OTG? Yes I get the same result.

OTG Troubleshooter?
a. First screen YES.
b. Second screen NO. (Connecting device has no effect.)

USB Host Diagnoses?
Android API:
a. Claims Support: Yes
b. Classes Found: Yes
c. Device detected: No
Kernel Support:
a. Claims Support: No
b. Device Detected: N/A

I did not duplicate where we are identical.

Please advise.

4. USB OTG Checker "System NOT Detect USB OTG Signal"
Unfortunately this last app seems iffy - the 'Check Device OS on USB OTG' functionality seems to work ok
36884c4078fecef9a74524d7f6505477.jpg
but 'Check USB OTG Signal' fails on my device as well
44f9e246f736f67084f4b1d22001c564.jpg
- sorry.

The results I'm getting suggest the Cable is defective.

Can I use a none OTG Cable to connect to my laptop?

Can I test Nexus 7 in this configuration?

Please Advise

You should not be using the OTG cable to connect to your computer - use the standard USB <-> micro-USB cable for that purpose.

No, you can't test this without an OTG cable.

I have ordered a new OTG cable. I will make a new post when it arrives.

I'll see if I can barrow a OTG cable for testing.

For testing purposes... Can I simply attach a memory stick by OTG cable (Once that is working switch to Camera)?

Thank you for your guidance.

peace

Once you've verified that a storage device works with the OTG cable you can certainly try the camera. These apps may even recognize the camera device - I don't think they're all storage specific.

You do have the original cable that you normally charge your tablet with, don't you? That should work to connect the tablet to your computer.

I'M THERE! SUCCESS!

1. The first cable was defective.
2. As soon as I used the new cable with memory stick all TESTS (above) worked piratically.
3. With Camera attached; I got the same messages as before, until I added 5V to the "Y" cable.
4. All the Camera Apps are working as advertised.

I recommend a cable like this one (assuming your Camera is USB-A):
5pcs-Left-Angled-font-b-90-b-font-Degree-font-b-Micro-b-font-font-b.jpg

Thank you so much for the TEST Apps, I could not have figured it out without your input.

Peace
