Evidence of last minute changes

Maybe they were just quality testing some because of all these defective unit issues? Maybe if it hadn't been resealed you would have gotten a defective one? Don't overreact.

First, did you get an previously opened box?

If not, then you have no right to say I am overreacting.

If they just put a sticker on the outside of the box, that the box was opened for x reason, then I would be OK.

But they just did this without stating why?

And yes, until I get a reason, I won't open the box. It is probably some very simple explanation, but I need that explanation.

That's just how I operate. I also ONLY purchased the Nexus 7 because I am having so much trouble with my Asus TF300T which lags so much it's become a very disappointment for my first tablet. I wanted to see if it's Android just being Android, or if Asus did something, or if it's hardware. I ran out of time to be able to return the Asus before I gave up on trying to fix the issues.

Otherwise, I don't need the Nexus 7 and I don't need trouble in my life.

No they did not need to open box to load my account. They said they do this with the serial number when you attempt to log on the first time.

If they did, then tell me how they got my password to log on?

Rob

I'll repeat myself; they were most likely just testing for defects.

If it's such a concern - call them.

Just want the reason for opening it!

That's not asking for too much!

My box had two pieces of tape on each side of the box and I could see the original had been cut. I'd already seen this thread before, so I wasn't totally surprised.

Everything looked fine though. I didn't notice at first, but apparently my Google account had already been setup on it. I only noticed afterwards when I unlocked and rooted it and had to enter my Google account in and remembered I was never prompted for it the first time.

Tablet is in perfect shape, I'm very happy to finally receive it, so I got no complaints. Though it is odd Google took the trouble to open the box and put my account information in. I don't recall asking for that and it seems like a waste of time to be doing this for everyone, guess this could be the reason for the delays.

Did anyone think that maybe the defect was the stickers themselves? Some people are jumping to the conclusion that the devices were returned. Kind of absurd given that returned units would have to get all the way back to Google, the repackaged, then all the way out to you. Returned units aren't even halfway there.

Anyway, I used to work in packaging for IBM. Most often things like this happen when a machine detects that the stickers are either out of place or not stuck. Rather than have a human go in and look it just applies a second one.

There are many other possibilities as well.

WOW, Either you have something against Google or your just a jerkface. Why in the hell would they give you a refurbished unit? So what if it was resealed? They may have been checking for the glass issue or to make sure everything is satisfactory. Keep in mind, Asus built the tablets. If you have such an issue, call them, but stop jumping to conclusions.

Just received my nexus 7 and I honestly think they shipped me a previously owned unit... The battery was above 90 percent and when powered on right out of the box, it displayed someone else's email account and told me to enter the password...

ahh that makes sense, they preloaded my account, okay cool :) One problem though, mine isn't playing any sound. As far as I can tell the sound is turned on but I get nothing. :( Now what?

I had the same problem when I got my new iPod a few months ago (now sold not an apple fan anymore) so I just asked them to replace and they did so contact Google and see what they say also check if ear buds work.

Then put a sticker on the box to notify me that they opened it.

Don't try to sneak on there without a reason.

I just want to know why.

That's not too much to ask.

And you expect to get it here on a forum Google isn't affiliated with?

As I've said before, CALL THEM.

On hold for 2 hours now!

Just though all you really smart people would know why they would do this. It has been done before on other products but they usually put a sticker on the box.

I agree with Rob. When you purchase something it is expected to come sealed so the customer can rest assured they are receiving an authentic, untouched unit. If the manufacturer broke these seals they owe it to the customer to offer an explanation. Otherwise they are detracting from the sole reason they have those stickers in the first place. This issue is only made worse by the fact that they have dropped the ball in other areas of this launch as well regarding customer service. :-\

I had the double tape as well. Perfect condition though. It's not like it was a return as they hadn't actually shipped them yet, they had a hard enough time getting them out this week it would seem. ;) The packing slip on the inside of the box had the 11th as the ship date... Fail! hehe

Just open the box and enjoy it for crying out loud!

Maybe they watched all the unboxing videos and decided to use thinner stickers.

UPDATE:

OK, just got off the phone with Google Customer Support.

The support rep had no reason.

Logged it into my account, and told me open box with him on the line.

After opening it and not noticing anything bad, as I expected.

I asked him if he could ask someone why they did this.

We were lucky that a Nexus 7 engineer was on hand.

Turns out, it was a quality check. He said they pull maybe 1 out of 100 and open the box to make sure this batch of units came out OK from manufacturing.

So it was one of the reasons some users said it might be.

It is not for account preload.

So all ends well after all, and I have my reason.

I told him that should have put a sticker on the box, he agreed.

I'm curious how it could be used when these just barely came out? That's very odd!

It could be the setting up of your account on the device? Maybe? I didn't notice duplicate stickers on my box, but I didn't really look too closely.

The way these things were boxed it would be totally stupid to have to rebox them for any reason. It's real work and quite frustrating to get these puppies outa da box. I did not notice that my stickies seemed to have been tampered with.
