I'm sure it was just a preauthorization to ensure my order was legitimate, but I had a little hope that the payment would clear and it would ship sooner than later.

Did anyone else notice this?

The consensus is, as you have mentioned, that Google simply "charges" your account to make sure that your card is valid, then pulls the charge as per its promise to charge you only when the device actually ships.
