I actually bring mine to work and charge it first thing so it has a relativity full charge for the night once I get home

And it gives me a chance to play with it during the day should I read something fun about it while in the office

I was thinking I am using the original cable, turn out to be I am using a cable from ebay last few days.

The short conclusion is: The cable does matter.

I am able to charge it up 100% in 2 hours (from 55%) now using original charger and original cable.

Then I put it in sleep mode overnight. The next morning it's still 99%. I haven't have a change to play with it that day. When I got home, it's still 98%. So 2 percent over 24 hours in sleep mode, I think it's OK.

Read the manual and states to only use the provided charging cable as your phone charger won't charge it all the way/correctly.

haha all manuals say that. I don't think anyone listens though. I have been a good one so far and only using the one it came with.... Probably because I only have one of that type of USB cord lol.

But have used the wall charger part for my iPhone lol.

Why did they provide such a short USB cord for the nexus?

Agreed. Its way to short. I have an outlet on one side of my couch and the thing barely reaches me. I have to use it on an angle lol.

Don't use a cheap charger because they don't put out enough current and don't plug it into the USB port on your computer. I did that one night, and it didn't charge anything.

Ok so i was wondering how everyone here charges their Nexus 7. Right now mine is at home sitting on the charger as it was about 35% when i woke up this morning and wanted to make sure it was fully charged when i get home from work.

Think that's too long for it to stay on the charger?

Or should i just use it like my phone, charge it at night then power it off during the day maybe?

I just fold out the crank on the side and go to town on it.

There are chargers everywhere around me. If there is one thing you can say about me, it's that I am well-endowed with them. So when the thing is idle and has been on much at all I just plug it in and forget about it until I need it. Modern charge systems and batteries are fine with keeping them topped without any chance of damage.

It's never really necessary, but it's nice to know that any time I grab the device and walk away, it will have full duration on the battery.

Def depends on what you are charging it with. Luckily I can use the same charger from my galaxy s3 and it charges pretty quickly and the cord is much longer.

Thanks for that tip. I think the cord is way too short on the Nexus. Also, when the Nexus is charging, I have no idea when it is complete. I see no led or any other indication. Anyone?

I have a charging station I setup next to my bed. I have a USB hub that is connected to eight USB connectors to charge my gadgets, Nexus 7 included. I charge my gadgets overnight and most of them get through the day without any recharging.

That's correct, I 2nd that.

I've noticed that the Nexus 7 charges similar to my old BlackBerry. It's very picky about what cable to use and what charger. Of course the stock one works but my old BlackBerry charger works whereas my iPad charger doesn't. I just put it on to charge overnight regardless of how much I have left.

Some general guidelines when charging Li-ion batteries:

A slow charge is preferable because it reduces heat and hysteresis. Heat of any sort decreases the overall life of the battery. Hysteresis reduces the performance of the battery in the discharge state causing a quicker plummet in battery charge from 100%. (NiMH batteries are worse with hysteresis, but Li-ion cells suffer from hysteresis also).

Unplug the charger as soon as possible when the battery is fully charged.

Lithium ion cells however can not tolerate overcharging or overvoltage and the charge should be terminated immediately when the upper voltage limit is reached.

Do not use charging pads or mats as they introduce more heat.

The Nexus 7 comes with a pulse charger. This is the transformer and regulator circuitry box which plugs into the wall (not the USB cable). Pulse chargers do the best job because they give the battery brief rest periods to allow the chemicals to settle and accept the charge with reduced hysteresis and heat.

A memorable though not quite equivalent phenomenon is the pouring of beer into a glass. Pouring very quickly results in a lot of froth and a small amount of beer at the bottom of the glass. Pouring slowly down the side of the glass or alternatively letting the beer settle till the froth disperses and then topping up allows the glass to be filled completely.

Forgot to mention depth of discharge. Consistently letting the battery run down to very low reduces the overall lifetime. It is better to minimize the depth of discharge by topping off when convenient than running it down completely.
