Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
Honestly, I know what to look for, but I also realize that some things in life won't be perfect and that while I go OCD crazy with my GN, I can't do that with this
.
Particularly because it's a $200 tablet that does way more than what it price indicates; IMO, performance more than makes up for some of the "defects."Former moderator & advisor.

16GB from Sam's Club. Perfect until I opened it up and accidentally cut the cable connecting the speaker to the board. So I'm speaker-less! My fault entirely.

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
The left side of my screen has an infinitesimal amount of screen lift above the bezel. You really have to hold it close to even see it. There is no glue sticking/unsticking or creaking sounds. Also have a little light bleed at brightest levels in completely dark room. Every thing else on the unit has been fine so far.
Not sure I could classify this unit as defective for either of these issues as they are minor. I think all backlit LCDs have some light bleed. I also think that you can't expect a $250 tablet to have the same build quality as a $500 tablet. There is a reason they were able to sell it so cheaply. They either cut costs on hardware, assembly methods, or both. Since the hardware is pretty pretty high quality (Tegra 3, DDR3 RAM, High-res screen etc) I think they they cut costs with their assembly methods, which is leading to the screen lift issue. And I do not expect that future units will not continue to have these types of issues. I highly doubt that Google or ASUS is going to change the design for hardcore users that frequent device forums. The general population would never even notice most of the issues reported here.
Of course there are legitimately defective units out there and they need to be replaced. - 08-08-2012, 11:45 AM #281

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
Got my 4th one delivered today and this is the best one of the bunch. It has the slightest of slightest screen lift that it's barely noticeable. I'm charging it now with a towel wrapped around and some vice grips on the area to see if it keeps it down. I might just end up keeping this one. I'll see how it goes.

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
First Nexus 7 ordered July 10th from Google, received July 17. Faint brightness flickering on websites and especially google maps which had constant flickering of brightness. 3 days later got a black dead pixel.
Replacement "ordered" 7/31 and received 8/3. Everything feels great, looks good to me. I am happy. Oh no, occasionally in Currents it get a horizontal line that flashes really quick. Only a few times a day. Also in Opera. I can make it happen on purpose in Opera where it it does a lot of them until its finished loading the thumbnail for the site I added to home page bookmarks.
Edit: I played tegra games without issue. Using it for hours a day all week. Then I ran the Google navigation for 1.5hr drive. Ran a few games just to show the device to someone and realized my touches weren't responding in areas. My typing would make sound but not always put the letter. I rebooted and was fine again. Then an hour of browsing forums and YouTube it stopped responding to touch again but turning screen off and on fixed it again. I shut it off and let it charge all night. It is still working.Last edited by dralezero; 08-11-2012 at 01:49 PM.

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
16Gb Nexus 7 - just noticed a distinct clicking noise when cleaning the screen with a microfiber cloth. Upon close inspection I believe that there is a distinct curve to the screen on the left hand side of the device towards the center like it may not be completely secure.
Haven't noticed any other hardware issues yet... - 08-10-2012, 09:27 AM #289
Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
for people returning it 10 times just accept it that the product is designed poorly. the left side of the screen does not hold down as well. causing it to lift up and click when pushed back down. returning it will only get you the same poorly designed product.

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
10 times is a bit extreme, especially if they all have the same issue, but it's not "poorly designed" it's designed perfectly for $200. Build quality issues are bound to happen with at-cost, low budget devices.
That said I had a defective unit (not just screen rising but a rippling effect at the slightest touch and about 40% back light bleeding) but my 2nd one only has a non-flush left side that I couldn't care less about. As long as it doesn't pop up far enough that I can stick something underneath it I'm fine. Again, it's a budget level product. - 08-10-2012, 09:52 AM #291

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
I'll have to agree with spicedham on this one. The lifted screen issue seems to be a feature of the Nexus 7. I got my 16GB some 10 days ago and the screen separation on the left side of the device towards the middle just became too annoying so I finally asked for a replacement. Google Play customer service was excellent, I was on the phone for about 10 minutes total, waiting time included. The replacement arrived two days later, about an hour ago. Surprise, surprise, it has the same issue. It is perhaps not as prominent as the first, but it's definitely there. I don't know whether to keep the original one, with all my accounts and apps, or the replacement, which seems to be a tad better, screen wise. I still have to turn it on and look for dead pixels and flickering.

Re: Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?
After playing game, I was listening to music (the only app is opening) it suddenly turned off. Then it kept rebooting until it ran out of battery. I had no way to interfere. I tried to turn off by keeping down the power button several times. After that, I found instructions to hard reset but it does not work either. It's unresponsive 100% of the times. So now I guess I have to call Google to return this junk. Such a waste of time.
